Abstract

Theories of learning often frame the student’s journey as a "hero’s quest," yet capturing these idiosyncratic narratives at scale remains a grand challenge for educators. This paper introduces CLICKSTREAM (Cyberinfrastructure for Learning Insights & Curricular Knowledge using Student Trace-data for Research in Educational Analytics & Measurement), a digital learning platform (DLP) designed to transform raw student interaction data into rich, context-aware "stories."

Unlike traditional platforms, CLICKSTREAM utilizes a collaborative co-design process where instructors tag digital assets (e.g., videos, quizzes) based on their specific role within a course’s instructional design and timeline. This enrichment allows for:

  • Instructional Adaptivity: Providing "design-loop" and "step-loop" insights that help instructors adjust teaching strategies in real-time or between semesters.

  • Predictive Support: Identifying struggling students early through theory-aligned feature engineering.

  • Theoretical Advancement: Enabling researchers to test complex assumptions of learning theories—such as self-regulated learning—across diverse contexts.

By integrating artificial intelligence to automate tagging and fostering interoperability with other DLPs like OpenStax and Terracotta, CLICKSTREAM aims to build a scalable ecosystem where data-driven storytelling empowers educators to provide personalized support for every learner’s unique quest.
